TANK REMOVAL & REPLACEMENT
Rockford Tower
Wilmington, DE
At Rockford Tower we dismantled the original ninety-four year old riveted tank inside a stone tower, carefully removing it piece by piece through a small ground level door. Inside, this door opened beneath the water storage tank. There was a clearance of approximately three feet between the outer stone tower and the inner storage tank to accommodate a metal spiral staircase for ascending to the observation deck.
We then erected a new welded tank inside the tower, again with only a single ground level door for access throughout the process. Built between 1899 and 1902, the tower with observatory is constructed of natural fieldstone. An example of the Italian Renaissance Revival style, it houses a half-million-gallon water storage tank. Rockford Tower is 57 feet in diameter at the base, 75 feet high to the floor of the observatory, and reaches a total height of 115 feet.
